Barley Hall is a 14th-century medieval townhouse that was once the home of the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York. Tucked in one of the oldest streets in York, Stonegate, the house has now been restored to its original grandeur and is now used for exhibitions such as the Bard at Barley Hall, a Shakespeare Exhibition.
Tucked away on the street of Stonegate is the Barley Hall, a beautiful medieval townhouse that was the home of the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York once upon a time. Later used as an office block, its architectural brilliance was hidden under the facades of modern developments and rediscovered in 1980 and restored to its former glory.
You can now visit the house, currently one of the tourist attractions in York, to admire its stunning exposed timber frames, high ceilings, and more. The house also has a horn window which is possibly the only one in England. There is a Great Hall in the house which is used for exhibitions. The current exhibition which is going on is Brad at Barley hall. The exhibition will take you to take a look at costumes from popular Shakespearean plays. You can also dress up and enact your own scenes on the interactive stage and opt to hold a puppet show of Macbeth and Hamlet. Barley Hall also houses the Barley Hall Coffee Shop, where you can relax with a cup of steaming hot drink.
