About St Mary's Abbey

The ruins of St. Mary's Abbey are one of the popular tourist places to visit in York. Built-in 1260, the abbey has been the most powerful and wealthiest abbey in Northern England. Although currently in ruins, you would enjoy visiting the place to enjoy its picturesque landscape and spend some time in its tranquil atmosphere. 

While exploring the ruins, take a look at the north and west walls of the abbey which you will find in the Museum Gardens. You will also be able to inspect the walls of the nave and crossing of the abbey church, as well as the cloister. Other important areas of this ruin are the Pilgrims' Hospitium, the West Gate, the 14th-century timber-framed Abbot's House, etc.
