The village of Silchester is amongst the historically important towns of England, due to the extensive archaeological artefacts found here, and is amongst the must places to see in reading. These archeological records date back to the 1st century AD when the town was supposedly built by the Romans.
Silchester is a village located in the Basingstoke in Hampshire which is adjacent to Berkshire. The town is quite famous for the archeological discovery of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum whose history is dated back to 45 AD. The discovered town has been historically important due to the archaeological finds of Iron Age and Atrebates Celtic settlements. The well preserved Roman walls of the town are amongst the best ancient town defences still present in England; and alongside the walls stands the iconic amphitheatre.
The Romans had dumped the town in the 6th or 7th century after losing it to Britain, afterwards its development took place under the English Kings like Kings Stephen who had commissioned the Castellum de Silva ( small castle in the woods) in 1147 during a war. The present village of Silchester was founded in the west of the town in the 17th or 18th century.
