Located in Gateshead, North East England, on the banks of the River Tyne, the Sage Gateshead is both a concert hall and a centre for musical education. This renowned music venue, located on the banks of the Tyne and designed by Norman Foster's firm, opened in 2004 and is currently occupied by North Music Trust under the name The Sage Group, after a local software company that is a major benefactor.
The Sage Gateshead is a cultural music centre of global importance, attracting approximately 500,000 visitors each year. Located next to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the brand new Millennium Bridge, the building is at the centre of a massive effort to revitalise Gateshead's riverfront. Three auditoriums, entertainment spaces, a Music Education Centre, The Sage Gateshead administrative offices, and a public concourse are all brought together under a single, undulating roof.
The 1,650-seat concert hall is the largest of the three primary performance spaces and features cutting-edge acoustics. There are 400 seats available in the second hall, which can be set up for folk, jazz, or chamber performances. The third room can hold up to 300 people and serves as the Northern Sinfonia’s both rehearsal hall and the main venue for the Music School's performances. It was originally planned that each theatre would be its own independent structure, but the exposed riverfront location made a concourse seem like a good idea.
