This reserve was given as a present to the city by George Parr as a private dwelling and nursery. Under the Parana Park Empowering Act of the 1950s, the recreation center was turned into a kids' park that presently stands as one of the exotic places to visit in Hamilton during New Zealand trip with kids.
Today the recreation center is a magnificent spot to have an outing or take the family for a walk. It is firmly connected to the Waikato River and Memorial Park, just as the River Walk south toward Hamilton Gardens. A Children's Garden has been created at the recreation center and was formally opened in mid-2012.
