Pagan Temple of Garni Overview

The Pagan Temple of Garni, located in the Kotayk Province of Armenia, is a striking example of ancient Armenian architecture and pre-Christian worship.

Dating back to the 1st century AD, the temple was dedicated to Mihr, the Armenian god of the sun. Constructed from basalt, the structure stands on a raised platform overlooking the Azat River gorge, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Its classical design, with Greco-Roman influences, features 24 columns and a pronaos (entrance hall), which are reminiscent of Hellenistic temples. Although the temple was partially destroyed during an earthquake in the 17th century, it was carefully reconstructed in the 20th century, preserving its historical and cultural significance. The Garni Temple holds deep religious and national importance for Armenians, symbolizing their ancient heritage and the country's transition from paganism to Christianity. Today, it attracts tourists and scholars alike, offering a glimpse into Armenia's rich pagan past.
