OLD TOWN AND BARGATE

When in Southampton, don’t miss out on a visit to the Old Town and Bargate, ranked amongst the most important gems of England. Boasting of unique features, and having played a significant role in the country’s history, it has also inspired numerous prominent figures in time, from Henry V and Jane Austen, to William Shakespeare and William the Conqueror. 

Located towards the south of Southampton’s city centre is the Old Town, a place that serves as the abode of many historic buildings that housed famous residents like William the Conqueror, Henry V, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and the Pilgrim Fathers, among others. Marking the entrance to the Old Town is the 800-year-old Bargate, which was originally built to be used as the main gateway and entrance point of this medieval town. 

From the Bargate, you can walk down to explore the entire Old Town, with thick walls surrounding it. You can also see many plaques that have been laid here, thereby commemorating major events in history, right from the times of the early roman settlements. Both the Old Town and the Bargate are some of the most iconic structures and monuments in Southampton and have a history that goes all the way to the late 12th century.
