Old Portsmouth, the most interesting destination of all the tourist places to visit in Portsmouth, is the abode of many of the city’s historic buildings, quaint tea rooms and traditional pubs. This olden district of Portsmouth city is the original medieval town that was planned by Jean de Gisors. The area is also the home to a small fishing fleet and a fish market.
Old Portsmouth, in the south west corner of Portsea Island, was where the construction of the city started as designed by Jean de Gisors. The district is now the residence of the city’s historical buildings, old pubs, cobbled streets and defensive hot walls. It is also where the Portsmouth Harbour and Historic Dockyard is located. Also known as the Spice Island, Old Portsmouth was where all the spices used to enter the city.
Today, it is the home to the city’s fishermen and even has a small fish market. After a tiring tour around the area, soothe your aching muscles with delectable home-type food and flavoursome wine at the pubs lining the streets of Old Portsmouth. Some historic pubs like Still and West, Spice Island Inn, Bridge Tavern, and the Dolphin are the major highlights of the place.
