About National and University Library
The National and University Library of Ljubljana (Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica, or NUK) is Slovenia's most important library institution. Located in Ljubljana, it serves as both the national library of Slovenia and the university library for the University of Ljubljana.
The current building was designed by renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik and completed in 1941. Its distinctive exterior features a combination of brick and stone, while the interior showcases Plečnik's signature elements including monumental columns and an impressive central staircase.
As Slovenia's legal deposit library, it collects and preserves all materials published in Slovenia. The collection includes approximately 2.6 million items, with valuable manuscripts, incunabula, and rare books. The library also houses important historical documents related to Slovenian cultural heritage.
Today, NUK continues to serve as a vital research institution and cultural landmark in Slovenia's capital.
