About Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond, Zanzibar

Nungwi Marine Turtles Mnarani, located on the northern coast of Zanzibar, is a conservation sanctuary dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of endangered green and hawksbill sea turtles. Established in 1993, the center initially aimed to protect turtle eggs from local poaching but quickly expanded into a full rehabilitation project. Set along the pristine Nungwi Beach, Mnarani provides a safe environment for injured turtles and offers them medical treatment until they are healthy enough to return to the ocean.

Visitors to Mnarani are given a unique opportunity to observe these fascinating sea creatures up close, learn about turtle ecology, and gain insights into the center’s conservation efforts. The sanctuary offers educational tours explaining the lifecycle of turtles, threats they face, and ongoing conservation initiatives. For a more interactive experience, visitors can join in feeding sessions at the sanctuary’s natural lagoon, creating memorable, hands-on encounters while supporting marine conservation efforts.
