Mingun Pahtodawgyi is a massive unfinished Buddhist stupa located in Mingun, Myanmar, about 10 kilometers northwest of Mandalay. Construction began in 1790 under King Bodawpaya, who envisioned creating the world's largest Buddhist monument. However, the project remained incomplete upon his death in 1819.
Standing at approximately 50 meters tall, the enormous brick structure was intended to reach 150 meters. A massive earthquake in 1839 created large cracks that split the monument's face, adding to its distinctive appearance.
Despite being unfinished, the Pahtodawgyi remains an impressive architectural achievement. Nearby attractions include the Mingun Bell, once the world's largest functioning bell, and the white Hsinbyume Pagoda. The site draws visitors for its historical significance and as a testament to ambitious royal vision cut short by time and nature.
