MERU NATIONAL PARK

Meru National Park, located in eastern Kenya, is a striking and diverse wilderness area renowned for its scenic beauty and abundant wildlife. Covering approximately 870 square kilometers, the park is characterized by its lush riverine forests, vast savannas, and rolling hills, offering a rich mosaic of landscapes. It gained fame as the setting for Joy Adamson’s famous book *Born Free*, which tells the story of Elsa the lioness. 

The park is home to an impressive variety of animals, including the “Big Five” — lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos. In addition, it hosts cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The Tana River and several smaller rivers crisscross the park, creating vibrant habitats that support both wildlife and lush vegetation.

Meru National Park remains less crowded than other Kenyan parks, offering a more intimate and tranquil safari experience.
