One of the top tourist attractions in Hereford is the Mappa Mundi which is the world's largest surviving medieval map also known as a unique world treasure. This map measures 1.59 x 1.34 meters (5’2” by 4’4”), and is constructed on a single sheet of Calf skin also known as Vellum.
There are studies that show that the map was made in the year 1300 and shows us the history and geography as it was understood in the thirteenth century by Christian Europe. The Map shows places like Europe, Asia, and North Africa as a Christian framework and other places like Jerusalem in the center.
The Mappa Mundi is known to have over 500 drawings, which show 420 cities and towns, 15 Biblical events, 33 plants and trees, birds, animals, and other strange creatures, and thirty-two images of the peoples of the world, and eight pictures from classical mythology. The Map also depicts that humans were made during 400-1450 and were shaped by Christianity.
