MAPLEDURHAM HOUSE

The extensive estate of Mapledurham on the banks of river Thames is one of the most well preserved houses located on the borders of Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Its large house, church and functioning watermill have made it a famous spot amongst the films and Television shows producers. Owing to its popularity it’s counted amongst the most beautiful places to visit in Reading.

Mapledurham House is a 12th century built family house and farming estate tucked at the bank of the River Thames is one of the most peaceful tourist places to visit in reading. The house was the property of Richard Blount who had bought it in 1490, and they reside in the house to this day. The house still has the 18th century atmosphere of a farming house, for you can find a dairy farm, a hydroelectric turbine, traditional water mill for flour and other traditional elements of countryside living.

The popularity of the house concerning preservation of the pre-industrial lifestyle has led to it being used in multiple film and television shootings; out of which, some of the prominent ones are Miss Marple, Midsomer Murders and Sharpe. The estate of Mapledurham has the Watermill which is the only mill on river Thames that functions till date, and the St. Margaret’s Church which has been in existence since the Norman times.
