MAGUL MAHA VIHARAYA

Magul Maha Viharaya is a significant Buddhist temple located in the town of Tissamaharama in southern Sri Lanka. Dating back to the 2nd century BCE, this ancient temple complex is renowned for its historical and architectural significance. The temple was established during the reign of King Kavantissa and is associated with the early Buddhist history of Sri Lanka.

The name "Magul Maha Viharaya" translates to "Great Temple of the Wedding," reflecting the belief that the temple was the site of the royal marriage between King Kavantissa and Queen Viharamahadevi, a legendary figure in Sri Lankan history. The temple's architecture showcases traditional Sri Lankan design elements, including intricate stone carvings and well-preserved structures.
