Kalagarh Dam Overview

This dam is encompassed by the picturesque landscape of the Corbett National Park and thus, it is an Insta-worthy location. Also known as Ramganga Dam, this water barrage's construction started in 1961 and completed in 1974.

Built in 1974, Kalagarh Dam, also known as Ramganga Dam, is a significant part of the Ramganga Multipurpose project. The project is aimed at offering irrigation and hydroelectricity to the nearby areas. Located within the boundaries of Jim Corbett National Park, the dam is a popular spot for tourists visiting the national Park. 

An embankment dam nestled on the shores of River Ramganga, Kalagarh Dam is also responsible for providing electricity to Jim Corbett National Park. Home to several migratory birds, the place is an ideal spot for ornithologists to observe various species of birds, especially during winters.

Ramnagar, also considered the gateway to Jim Corbett National Park, is well-connected to Delhi and other major cities in the north via regular buses.

History of Kalagarh Dam



Also known as Ramganga Dam, Kalagarh Dam has been an integral part of the irrigation and hydroelectric project known as Ramganga Multipurpose Project. The plan of constructing the dam started in 1961, and the dam was successfully completed in 1974. The dam is responsible for providing water to 142,086 acres of farmland, controlling floods, and to generate power. Unfortunately, the 2010 Kalagarh Dam flood was one of the largest of its kind in the history of India.
