JELEP LA

The Jelep La is a mountain pass in Sikkim that connects Lhasa to India. This pass is located 4 kilometres south of the Nathu La but it has a slightly higher elevation.

History suggests that this route was widely used for trade purposes between India and Tibet. In fact the Kalimpong point was used as the contact point for both countries. The name of the pass comes from the Tibetan word which means the lovely level pass. \

The locals also called it the shepherds bronze pass. The pass is located at a height of 14000 feet and is located close to Menmecho lake. TheJelep La pass has some of the best views worth admiring, thanks to the forests and the flowers which are in full bloom.

• By Car: The Jelep La location is 64 km from the city centre, it will take 2 hours via the NH 310 route.

Jelep La is open throughout the year, so you can plan your visit to this place at any time of the year. 

• The best season to visit Jelep La will be the summer season from March to May because this is the time when the climate is pleasant. 
• The best day in the week will be the weekdays due to less crowds regardless of any time of the year. 
• The best time of the day to visit Jelep La will be in the morning due to less crowds and a favourable temperature.

• You will need a valid permit to visit the Nathu La pass, so make sure you get one before you plan your travel. 
• Jelep La can get pretty cold at any time of the year, so make sure you wear comfortable winter clothing during your visit. 
• Make sure you use a vehicle that is fuel efficient even during the cold winters as not all will suit this climate. 
• We recommend sticking to the speed limit when travelling to avoid the risk of accidents.
• More than just sweaters, you will need insulators to keep yourself warm during the cold winters.
