GRAINGER TOWN AND GREYS MONUMENT

The classical buildings in Grainger Town, designed by the city's namesake architect Richard Grainger, are a shining example of Newcastle's architectural prowess. Nearly half of its buildings have been recognised for their historical or architectural significance, namely the Grey Monument erected in 1838, which makes it one of most visited places to see in Newcastle.

Grey's Monument, one of the well-loved tourist places to visit in Newcastle is a gathering spot in the middle of town, stands 135 feet tall at the northern end of Grey Street. It was constructed in 1835 to honour the second Earl Grey for his work as Prime Minister and author of the Reform Bill of 1832. Amazing cityscapes may be seen from the 164-step observation deck atop the column, which is exclusively exposed to the public on rare occasions.

One of the best retail areas in Newcastle is Grainger Street, which terminates with Grey's Monument. After Richard Grainger, the city's chief architect from 1824 until 1841, the street and the surrounding neighbourhood, Grainger Town, were named.
