Almost two centuries after it was established on the evening of October 22, 1835, the Grainger Market remains as busy and modern a trade experience as it was when it was the largest enclosed market in Europe. The market is a historic landmark in the centre of Newcastle and is sometimes referred to as the city's first supermarket. During the 2020 pandemic, it continued to serve customers, received daily deliveries, and sold perishable goods and marked 185 years in business.
Almost two centuries after it first opened, Grainger Market is still a vital part of Newcastle's thriving shopping and dining scene. Within easy walking distance of Grey Street and the city's signature Grey's Monument is where you'll find Newcastle's covered market. In the Great British Market Awards 2020, Grainger Market took home the title of "Britain's Favourite Market".
When the big covered market in Newcastle was first constructed in 1835, the two halves served separate functions: the northern part was a meat market, while the southern half was a vegetable market. John Dobson, the architect responsible for the building, named it after the city planner and developer Richard Grainger. The meat and vegetables are still available, but the market has expanded to include a wide variety of shops and stalls selling everything from potted plants to cereal sold by the pound to party favors to the first Marks & Spencer Penny Bazaar.
