FINCHALE PRIORY

Finchale Priory, also known as Finchale Abbey, is located at the site of hermit dwelling of St. Godric, a retired sailor and the merchant who settled there after spending a long life as a traveler. The place is also used as a holiday retreat for the Durham monks. Now you can enjoy a picnic at the bank of River Wear. You can also take pleasure in a wonderful picnic experience with your family. 

Finchale Priory is less than 5 miles north of Durham, located on the bank of river wear. This unique tourist attraction in Durham and an English heritage site is free to enter, and you are even free to clamber over extensive ruins.

The Finchale Priory was founded in 1996 on the location of the spiritual retreat of St Godric. Later on, it was used as a holiday retreat for the Durham monk from the Cathedral as the place is very relaxing and peaceful with a river.

Currently, it has become a wonderful place to visit in Durham. There you can explore ruins and wander through the woods on the opposite river site. There is a small shop where you can enjoy ice cream, scones, drinks, etc. For a quick munching or lunch, you can carry a picnic basket, find a comfortable spot in the grass and enjoy.
