Located in the center of Newcastle's downtown, Eldon Square is the city's oldest and most well-known premium shopping centre. It features an impressive collection of over one hundred stores and twenty-five restaurants. Everything you could ever want or need is conveniently within easy walking distance, from clothing and beauty boutiques to stores selling accessories, stationery, electronics, and home goods.
There are hundreds of stores waiting to be explored at Eldon Square, making it the ideal starting point for a city exploration and finding your next great outfit, tasty snack, or source of creativity. Eldon Square received the North East Autism Society's (NEAS) inaugural Autism Acceptance Gold Award 2021, making it the region's first shopping centre to be so honoured.
The original town wall roughly followed the present-day location of Blackett Street, which is close to where the shopping centre is located. In other words, the former site of the wall has been transformed into a modern shopping mall. Charles Hutton's map from 1770 shows that the ancient wall followed the south side of Blackett street.
The Nunn's Garden was located just south of the north city wall, where the city would have expanded as it grew within its town walls. It's close to where the old Green Market used to be. High Friar Chare, which ran parallel to what is now called "High Friars way" in the shopping centre, surrounded the Nunn's Garden. Each of the neighbourhoods here is named after a tower that once stood sentry along the city's outer wall.
