Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum Overview

Formerly known as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum happens to be the earliest museum built in the Indian city of Mumbai.

 Established back in the year 1855, the structure was first used as a storehouse of industrial and decorative arts. However, in the year 1975, it was renamed in honor and memory of the great scholar, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad. The museum was opened for public visits in the year 2008.

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum displays the early craftsmanship and art of the early residents of Bombay. The museum manifests the rich cultural heritage of Mumbai through decorative and fine art.

Some important primitive objects that visitors can see in the museum include small clay models, costumes, copper and silverware, lithographs, maps, photographs, dioramas, and rare books that highlight important tidbits about life in the city from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. 

The museum also has a manuscript of the well-known Arab poet Hatim Tai, which dates back to the seventeenth century. 

You can also find the historic Kala Ghoda figurine placed inside the museum. Just outside the building, a monolithic elephant sculpture discovered from the water body originating from Elephanta Island has been installed.

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is located at a distance of about 3.2 kilometers from the Mumbai bus stand. Once you reach the city bus stand, you can easily take a local taxi or book a cab to reach the museum. 

The total time taken to cover the journey is near about 16 minutes, considering the vehicle to be running at an average speed.

Many tourists prefer visiting Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum during the winter season (October-February) as this is the best time for visiting the city of Mumbai.

Can we book tickets in advance?

Yes, of course. If you are visiting Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in a group, you can register for a themed tour in advance.

 People visiting the place in a group can even book an interpretive tour. Workshops can also be conducted on request and two weeks of advance booking.

 However, if you are a solo visitor and are interested in just taking a stroll through the museum and admiring the exhibits, you do not really need to make an advance booking.

Is photography allowed inside the museum?

Yes, taking photographs inside the museum is allowed, but only for non-commercial and personal use. The pictures taken here cannot be sold, published, reproduced, or distributed.

 Furthermore, visitors cannot use flash, monopod, or tripod for taking pictures inside the museum.

 In addition, video recording is strictly prohibited.

Can we take edibles inside the museum?

No. Carrying outside drinks or food items to the premises of the museum is strictly prohibited. Visitors have to deposit their water bottles and bags at the concerned counter before entering the museum.

 In addition, chewing gutka, paan, or gum is also not acceptable inside the premises of the museum.

Are there guided tours?

Yes. Guides for both public tours and private tours are available at the museum.

 Visitors have to book their guides at a small additional fee. The guides provided are multi-lingual and can convey information in English, Hindi, and Marathi languages.

 Audio guides are also available at an extra charge of INR 50 per head.

What time do the galleries close?

The galleries get closed at 6 PM every day. The last tickets to the museum are sold to the public at 5.30 PM, after which the ticket counter gets closed for the day.
