Crazy Horse Memorial Overview

The Crazy Horse Memorial is a monumental sculpture located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA. It is dedicated to the Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse and is intended to honor Native American cultures and heritage.

The idea for the Crazy Horse Memorial originated with Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear, who sought to create a counterpart to Mount Rushmore that would celebrate Native American leaders. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski was commissioned to undertake the project in 1948. Ziolkowski had worked on Mount Rushmore with Gutzon Borglum and brought his expertise to the creation of the Crazy Horse Memorial.

The sculpture depicts Crazy Horse mounted on a horse with his arm outstretched, pointing into the distance. It is being carved out of Thunderhead Mountain, and when completed, it will be the largest sculpture in the world. Unlike Mount Rushmore, which was completed during the lifetime of its creator, the Crazy Horse Memorial remains a work in progress.

The Crazy Horse Memorial also includes the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center, and the Indian University of North America. These facilities provide educational resources and insights into Native American history, culture, and traditions.
