Caversham Court is a public garden of national importance which is listed amongst the English Heritage of Parks and Gardens and thus, one of the most important places to visit in Reading. The gardens were built in the 17th century by Thomas Loveday as a private retreat.
Caversham Court is an extensively large public garden located over the river of Thames in the suburb of Caversham, Berkshire. The garden got its name from the house of Caversham which was built in the 12th century as a cannon for the St. Peter’s Church during the mediaeval times. Later on, a need to lease the property to an individual had arised, who was to take care of the property and church both. The property was being used by the family of the Milward who would continue to live there as private tenants until the early 1600s.
After the heydays of the Civil War, during the 17th century the Loveday family had established there, they had planted the hedge along a long walk of the garden. And, that’s how the gardens were laid out as a private retreat surrounding the house. In 1934, the gardens were finally opened for the general public and were used for religious purposes by local Pagans.
