Cathédrale La Major Overview

Also known as the Cathedral of Sainte Marie Majeure, the Cathedral La Major was built after 200 years of a hiatus and is compared to the size of the St. basilica in Rome. Built-in the 19th century, the construction of one of the iconic Marseille attractions was considered to be as innovative as that of a railway station.

Considered to be one of the largest cathedrals built in the Middle Ages, the La Major has dimensions similar to that of the St. basilica of Rome. This major and iconic structure is a must add to the itinerary of visitors who are wondering what to see in Marseille during their trip. The historical monument was designed and built as a representation of the multicultural reputation of the city of Marseille. Combining Roman and oriental styles of architecture, the cathedral features white marble, green stone, onyx and mosaics shipped from Venice. Witness the largest 19th century cathedral and it's popular places with our best Europe tour packages.

The beautiful interiors and exteriors give the cathedral an original aspect with the distinctive features of a religious building. The outer facade of the cathedral is decorated with statues of Christ, Apostles, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and the saints of Provence. Each day several tourists and locals make their way to the sea view square surrounding the Cathedral, or to explore its stunning interiors. Additionally post renovation, the 19th-century warehouses have turned into one of the trendiest places to visit in Marseille.
