First, take note of the two sets of steps: the small servant stairs on the right side and the main, spacious stairs in the centre. Gaze upward at the stone chimneys, which are vital to the house's heating system because they are made to direct smoke and draw in fresh air. Observe the 6-foot-2-inch doors, which are designed to hold heat. Look around the three closets, which are used to keep dishes and other things.

Look around the first floor

The entrance of Carlyle House leads into the grand hall, so begin your exploration of the ground level there. From this angle, you can see the main stairs that lead to the upper floors and the back door that leads to the garden, yard and magnolia deck. On your left, you can see the music room and eating room, which were used for public events. Explore the private areas to the right, which include the studio and bedroom of John Carlyle.

Go to the bedroom of George William Carlyle on the left. View Sarah Carlyle Fairfax and Anne Carlyle's chamber across from it, which has an exhibit of Sarah's bridal gown.
