The Museum was open to public in 1975 and was built on the remains of Bergen’s oldest buildings from the the first half of the 1100s.These architectural remains are still an important part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, and aims at giving the visitors a glimpse of the daily life in Bergen in the Middle Ages.
While exploring the museum, you will be able to witness 800 year old foundation objects such as ceramics, tools, pottery, skulls, skeletons, artefact ruins and inscriptions. Bryggen in Bergen has been an important part of the city since the Middle Age and in 1955, a part of this area was burnt down. Following this, there was a 13 year archaeological excavation during which thousands of objects from the middle ages were discovered.
Go for a 90-minute-long walking tour of the museum to understand its exhibits better. The tour starts in the mediaeval exhibition inside the Bryggens Museum and then continues outside. There is a quick stop next to St. Mary’s Church to witness the nearby mediaeval ruins, and then proceed towards the old wooden houses at Bryggen which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue your tour to reach the ruin of the mediaeval Wine Cellar and Town Hall.
The Bryggens Museum has several activities that are available inside the museum for the children.
