Belem Tower Overview

Originally built as a defense for the city, the Belem Tower was later transformed into a lighthouse and then a customs center. It is also one of the best places to visit in Portugal to witness the incredible Manuelino style of architecture by famous architect and sculptor Francisco de Arruda. Built between the years 1514 and 1520, it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located on the northern bank of the Tagus River, the Torre de Belem or Belem Tower was originally intended as a gateway to the city of Lisbon as well as a defensive fortress for the city against possible attacks and invasions from the Tagus. It is considered an architectural jewel today that has 16 windows with cannons. You can also get a firsthand view of all the holes and pits where the prisoners were thrown into.

The tower comprises five floors that go up to the roof terrace and each of which are connected with a small and narrow spiral staircase. The various floors house the Governor’s Hall, The Kings’ Hall, the Audience Hall, the Chapel, and the Roof terrace. Another interesting feature of the palace is on its western façade which is a gargoyle shaped like a rhinoceros.
