The Bastion of Maddalene, a section of Verona's magistral city wall, was erected in 1527 by the Serenissima Republic of Venice to improve their military architecture and provide defence for the city. The Maddalene's Bastion was modified in the nineteenth century following the vision of the most prominent Habsburg military architect and included the replacement of the original higher open-air artillery positions with the second order of casemates.
In 2015, the bastion was finally opened to the public following considerable reconstruction and restoration. All of the bastion's casemate system on both the lower and upper levels, the entrance, embrasures, and armouries, as well as a portion of the underground countermine gallery, underwent conservative restoration.
The renovation was carried out in accordance with the law and considering the significant historic and artistic interest of the bastion. A tour of this bastion will let you discover the hidden military architecture of the city and learn about its history.
