AUCKLAND CASTLE

Auckland Castle is among the best places to go in Durham and is one of the well-preserved Bishop’s palaces in entire Europe. It is also located at the center of the Auckland project. Auckland Castle has seen many conservations work to transform the state rooms in the original Georgian Gothic splendor initially designed by the architect James Wyatt.

Placed high above the exceptional river Wear, the Auckland Castle was home to Prince Bishop of Durham in ancient history. The Auckland Castle was where prince Bishop used to hunt, entertain and worship. 

These were compelling people, were blessed with exceptional powers by the Norman Kings of England and the Church, and governed vast swaths of North East England. 

The castle was built to host hunting parties and lavish medieval celebrations to entertain the royalty and to impress the visitors with the bishop’s wealth and power. Also, from Bishop Auckland, the prince Bishop ventured to broker royal marriages, advise kings, and lead armies to battle. 

The castle has been transformed multiple times and restored to its numerous forms. The room contains delicate plasterwork and sumptuous furnishings in the unique Gothic style. Auckland Castle is the surviving example of Wyatt’s work.
