Amarnath Cave is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites, located in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of 3,888 meters in the Himalayas. The cave houses the naturally occurring Ice Shiva Lingam, which is believed to form and dissolve in sync with the lunar cycle.
According to legend, Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati inside this cave, making it a highly revered site. The cave was rediscovered by a Muslim shepherd, Buta Malik, in the 19th century, and since then, it has attracted millions of devotees.
The Amarnath Yatra is held annually from July to August when the cave is open for devotees. It is a challenging yet spiritually enriching journey. Pilgrims either take the steeper but shorter trek route from Baltal or the longer but scenic route via Pahalgam to seek blessings at this sacred shrine. Many people include this in their Kashmir Tour Packages to visit the sacred site and offer their prayers.

Why Visit?
Know Before You Go
The best time to visit is during the annual Amarnath Yatra, usually in July-August. The weather is relatively stable, and the ice Shiva Lingam is fully formed. However, temperatures can still be freezing, and snowfall is possible, so proper preparation and warm clothing are essential.
Pilgrims can reach Amarnath Cave via two trekking routes—Pahalgam (46 km, easier) or Baltal (14 km, steeper). Helicopter services operate from Baltal and Pahalgam. Registration for the yatra is mandatory, and pilgrims should be physically fit due to the high-altitude trekking conditions.
Yes, medical camps are set up at multiple points along the Yatra route. Oxygen cylinders, first-aid facilities, and emergency services are available. However, due to high altitudes, trekkers should acclimatize properly and carry personal medications for altitude sickness, cold, and fatigue.
Pilgrims must carry a Yatra Permit issued by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) after medical fitness certification. A valid government-issued ID proof (Aadhar, Passport, or Voter ID) is required for verification. Travel insurance is recommended. Foreigners need additional permissions. Keep multiple copies of documents for safety.
