Also known as Old Elbe Tunnel, Alter Elbtunnel is one of the most popular Hamburg tourist attractions. It runs under the River Elbe which connects St. Pauli jetties on the north side of the river to the Steinwerder in the Port of Hamburg. The tunnel was built to help the dockworkers with an easy and reliable way to cross the river.
Built-in 1911, the Elbetunnel is an underground tunnel created to start a new pathway that helped people cross the river. The tunnel featured technological advancement during these times, making it easier for people to pass through this 80 feet tunnel through elevators.
