Alleppey Lighthouse Overview

Also referred to as Alappuzha LightHouse, this old lighthouse was built in 1862. The construction of the present lighthouse began in the reign of Marthanda Varma-II Maharaja, a prominent Travancore ruler. It was completed during the reign of Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore.

The lighthouse features a 30-metre-high cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern. It was constructed using laterite stones and teak. Climb up the lighthouse through a 100-step wooden staircase. At the top, enjoy scenic views of the rumbling waves of the Arabian Sea and sunset

Inside the museum, you can see old things like oil lamps and new-age equipment like radar beacons and GPS-based systems. It is a fun place to learn about the history of the lighthouse and the area.

 After visiting the museum, you can visit the beach, have fun at the water, and snack on kappalandi (roasted peanuts) sold on the beach.

  • Best Day in the Week: You can visit the Alleppey Lighthouse Museum on all days of the week except Monday. All Mondays are closed for public visits. If you want to avoid crowds, you can plan your visit on weekdays.
  • Best Time of the Day: The museum is open for public visits only from 9.00 AM to 11.45 AM and from 3.00 PM to 4.30 PM post noon. You can visit in the morning to escape the heat.
