Nohkalikai Falls near Cherrapunji drops approximately 340 metres, making it the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The fall is most powerful during and just after the monsoon. The viewpoint is accessible by road and has no trekking required.
Located near Nongriat village in Cherrapunji, the Double Decker Living Root Bridge is formed from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees trained over 15 to 20 years to grow into bridge structures. There are two tiers, the lower approximately 50 metres long and the upper approximately 30 metres.
Ziro Valley is home to the Apatani tribal community and is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list for its unique landscape and traditional rice farming practices. The Apatani are known for sustainable farming methods that have maintained the valley's ecology for centuries. The Ziro Music Festival (late September to early October) draws travellers from across India.
Majuli Island on the Brahmaputra River is the world's largest inhabited river island and a centre of Vaishnavite tradition. The island has 22 sataras (monasteries) that have preserved Sattriya dance, a classical dance form recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The island is accessible by ferry from Jorhat (approx. 1 hour). Ferry service runs during the day only.
Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, covering 287 square kilometres. It is known for its phumdis, floating masses of vegetation and soil, some large enough to support structures. Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in the world, sits within the lake and protects the Sangai deer, a species found nowhere else on Earth. The total Sangai population is approximately 204 individuals.
These destinations do not appear in most standard North East tour packages, but they are worth adding if your itinerary has the time and flexibility.
Dzukou Valley sits at 2,400 metres on the Nagaland-Manipur border. It is known for its seasonal wildflowers, particularly the Dzukou lily, which covers the valley between June and September. The trek from the Nagaland side via Viswema village involves approximately 6 to 8 km of moderate trail to reach the valley floor. Camping inside the valley is the best way to experience it.
Tip: Sunset views from the campsite on the ridge are the defining experience. An overnight stay is essential to appreciate the valley at its quietest.
Sela Pass at 13,700 feet connects Tawang to the rest of Arunachal Pradesh. The pass is surrounded by snow-covered peaks and dotted with small glacial lakes, including Sela Lake at the summit. Most travellers stop briefly for photographs, but spending 30 minutes at the lake in clear weather offers some of the finest panoramic views on the entire Tawang route.
Mawlynnong, near Dawki, is known as one of the cleanest villages in Asia. The designation comes from the village community's long-standing practice of bamboo dustbins, organised waste management, and community-maintained gardens. Bamboo tree houses in the village offer elevated views of the Bangladesh plains below.
Zuluk is a small hamlet on the Old Silk Route in East Sikkim at approximately 10,000 feet. The main attraction is the Zuluk spiral road, a series of 32 switchbacks visible in a single panoramic view from nearby Thambi View Point. The area sees far fewer visitors than Gangtok or Nathula.
