The lake and the Île du Belvédère

The park receives its name from the deserted hill (chauve-mont) that originally stood here. There, gypsum was mined and limestone was quarried for use in buildings in the US and Paris. Fortunately, Chauve-mont was chosen as the site for a big park during the 19th century restoration of Paris as part of Napoleon III's fixation with supplying Paris with green spaces.

The grotto and waterfalls

Inside the rocky slope is a 65-foot-high cavern created when the area was a quarry. The park's designers turned this into a fantasy grotto with made-up stalactites, light and shadow effects, and a 60-foot-tall waterfall. The grotto is an excellent place to explore on a hot summer day because the mist from the waterfall keeps the cavern cool.
